Loads under sail

Postby GreenLake » Thu Jun 12, 2014 8:06 pm

For the engineering minded in this crowd, here is the link to a paper that discusses the estimation and measurements of certain loads on the rigging for the downwind case, which is the one that is more difficult to estimate. In the upwind case the forces are limited to the righting moment of the boat, any stronger forces would just knock it flat on the water. In the downwind case (spinnaker) that limit is not available. Happy reading.
