Sail storage

Postby jsbowman6 » Sat Sep 03, 2016 10:04 am

I remove and store both of my sails in the basement of my house and carry them out and hank them on each time. I wondered if I am going through more trouble than necessary which slows getting the boat ready to go. So would like to see what you guys do?

During the season the main stays on the boom and is rolled up.

The boom comes off the mast, and the whole boat is covered by a tarp.

The jib is kept rolled up elsewhere.

(Off-season, I keep both on a sail rack in the basement.)

All sheets stay rigged and on the boat.

I remove the sails, roll them and place them in their sail bags. I store them in the cuddy cabin. My boat has lockable hatch covers to keep the cuddy cabin dry.

Used to remove sails completely after each trip. That was before I went out every week. Got too tedious to re-rig.

The few times I have my DS on a slip for a weekend, I will keep the sails attached. I have a cover for the main and one for the jib.

In season the main is rolled and attached to boom whether on trailer or mooring with battens attached, jib is rolled and in cuddy. It is covered with boom tent or boat cover if on trailer.

Off season I remove battens, fold and put into large tote and stored in my barn. So far has been mouse proof.

My boat has to travel an hour to get to water, so I pull the whole thing apart every time. Jib is folded and stored in a bag, and the main is rolled and put in a long bag.

I agree that it is tedious, but since I'm taking the whole thing apart everytime to trailer it doesn't seem like that much extra.

Roll them both and put in long bag. No humidity, less wrinkles. Stored on bedroom floor for wife to complain about :D

After sailing, rolled up and stuffed in back seat. Later layed out and folded like new and put in sail bag in cuddy. For the winter, in the house.

I store my boat at a dry storage facility on Caesars Creek lake.]
Jib sock for the furled jib and boom tarp to cover the main.
It still takes me 20 minutes to get the boat ready for the water
