When mounted, the rope doesn't seem to have any effect on… anything. Im sure its hook up wrong but not sure what the right way is to thread the rope

Is this a rudder downhaul or uphaul? Hard to tell from the extremely low res pic ... ?

The only line on my completely stock 83 DSII is a downhaul.

It might be confusing in the photo, the line exits the rudder head and runs along the bottom of the tiller to a clam cleat. It is not so much of a downhaul, but more of a hold-down to keep the rudder blade from riding up in your wake when you're up on the step and doing 30kts with a rooster tail! LOL  Some sailors replace the clam cleat with a quick-release to avoid rudder damage in the event it hits something. HTH

Not confusing at all... very helpful. On mine, I have a pin going through where your bolt is (the center of rotation of the rudder). It's got space in between the rudder and the sides, and the rope gets jammed in there (always). Looks like I need to put a bolt in there and tighten it up.

Thanks, very helpful.
