Under seat storage?

Postby fatjackdurham » Thu Jul 27, 2017 2:19 pm

I saw this on the West Marine website:

https://www.westmarine.com/buy/sail-systems--cargo-net-storage-pocket--6871503?recordNum=66

Has any one tried this? or are there other options for storage and organization on a daysailer?

The DS2 is short of convenient places to stash items that you'd like to get to quickly while underway.

There is (at least on some models) a small recess under the seat, with a lid on top. Then there are nets or socks that you can put on the inside of inspection ports, giving you a small bit if storage that is pretty well protected (but takes a moment to unscrew the port to get to and while the port is open, the watertight integrity of the flotation space between the hull is temporarily compromised). Certainly something to consider for stuff that you don't want to have to dig in the cuddy for, but need to positively keep from getting wet.

The plastic storage pocket with cargo net that you have linked seems a good solution for stashing stuff that you need to keep in reach, but that is splash proof. One advantage is that items are in sight, so you can put things like a VHF there and know that even your crew can find it.

For the DS2, many boats still have the original cuddy doors, while others have been retrofitted. If you haven't already added a simple storage net on the outside of the cuddy doors, you could cut a hole and insert on of these pockets to give a recess to put stuff in. (Flat nets stretched over the surface of the door will hold your stuff in place, but really aren't as convenient for getting stuff).

If you mount this in the seat back or the side of the seat it would intrude on the flotation space (minimally). The most important thing in those locations would be to ensure the the pocket is fully sealed where it meets the cockpit molding, so that water can't get in (or air out) when you need the flotation (e.g. after a capsize).
