Is it a DS1, DS2 or a DS3?

Postby neosoul » Sun Apr 07, 2013 7:58 pm

Hello! I am newbie and stumbled upon this forum this evening. I am considering purchasing this DaySailer from neighbor who is selling it to get a bigger boat. I am hoping to get some answers and info on how to get this boat ready to sail from this forum.
From what I can see the standing rigging seems to be simple, but I am not sure how to setup the running rigging or if I own a DS1, DS2 or DS3.

Thanks!

A picture would help, but based on the data you've provided, I'd say your boat is an '83' or '84', and is probably a DS II.

Your sail # would be 12165, which according to http://daysailer.org/tech_hullindex.php is indeed in the DSII range for sail numbers. But, things are never simple, so pictures!

Hull number, plus the picture, it's a DS II. From the plate, I'd say it was built in 1983. When you christen it, let me know and I'll put it on the 'official/unofficial' Daysailer list. :D

Definitely a -2 or a -3. Not sure what deck/cockpit characteristics separate the two, but looks a lot like my '79 -2. Those blocks near the stern are for spinnaker sheets. Is that a socket for a stern light as well?

My boat has horn cleats mounted just inboard/aft of the chainplates, and I've often wondered what they were for. I use the stbd one to cleat off my jib downhaul, and occasionally use the port one to tie off my anchor retrieval line ... ?

The standing and running rigging are pretty straightforward on these gems: The DS is a sailor's sailboat! Just yard-rig it once, and it will all become quite obvious ... :D

I agree that it's DSII, at least with what we've got to go on here. The absolutely-for-sure way to confirm it would be to post a profile photo showing the entire boat. The DSII still had that low aft freeboard that the DSI had, swoopy and fast-looking. The DSIII had a higher aft freeboard, dry, demure, almost looks like a keelboat. In my humble opinion, of course, and no offense meant to DSIII owners. :)

Definately a DS2. You even still have the original hatch covers.
