I found it frustrating, because it would be locked when I needed it unlocked and vice versa. Couldn't get used to it.

Also, on a small boat, anything that's locked down is risky. That goes for cleated sheets as well. You need to be able to cast them off instantly.

Further, I use my setup also when I singlehand in our local beer can race. Being able to instantly respond to traffic is rather essential.

I do use a "Tiller Tamer", but almost never tighten it down all the way. I like to be able to move the rudder if I need to without having to loosen the tightening knob. Most times when I use it the winds are moderate enough to have it set fairly loose. I replaced the line on it recently with a better quality line than what came with it. The line that came with it seemed to swell somewhat making adjustments difficult and not allow the tiller to move smoothly.

It's fun to think about more enhancements. Besides the Tiller-tamer, I came upon a similar device called the Tiller-stay and a different approach called the Tiller-clutch. The latter seems quite nice, and has gotten me wondering what I might be able to rig up using a clothes pin.
