tapered vs. non-tapered mast

tapered vs. non-tapered mast

With limited knowledge and even lesser ability I've recently restored my dad's 1963 DS and am having to source or repair the mast.

In my search, I run across tapered and non-tapered varieties. an someone tell me what dimension that are referring to? top to bottom are cross-sectional?

A common non-tapered mast on Dasysailers is the Dwyer DM284, here:
