Trying to learn build year for 17' O'Day Daysailer I. Hull No. 19183, Class No. 3535 hand engraved on plate at forward wall of cuddy.

My Daysailer "Curlew," according to the metal plate on the stern, is hull number 3079 and class number 318 (also the sail number). "Made by Marscot Plastics, Fall River, MA for G.D. O'Day Associates."

Formerly of Fleet 1 in Annapolis, MD, we now keep it in Weed, CA.

Can any one tell me when it was built?

1959, see above link. O'Day contracted with Marscot till 1960 or 61. You can read some of the history here: http://www.dolphin24.org/ODay_Corporation.html, but the bottom line is that everyone involved were friends and business partners.

Does Curlew have wooden or fiberglass seats? and does she have a false keelson forward of the Centerboard case? On my boat (#37), it's an upside-down U-shaped channel of fiberglass, the mast sits on it. I thought it was quite useless till I started using it as an attachment point for under-deck fittings and blocks. These DS's, simple as they may be, are really a gift that keeps on giving. Take good care of your "old girl!"

Thanks, Tom. I appreciate the quick response. Curlew has the original wood (mahogany, I think) bench seats and thwart, with coamings to match. A few years back, with some very helpful advice from Greenlake and others on this forum, I took all of the wood out and refinished it using the "epoxy envelope" method first posted by Greenlake. Then a couple of years ago, our old wooden rudder head broke (while beating upwind in 10-15 knots!), so I built a new one from Baltic birch ply. And yes, Curlew has the false keelson forward of the CB trunk. We love our Daysailer!

That rudder head looks nice.

Now, what about making a new blade with better foil shape?

Giving your rudder (and if you can) your CB good airfoil section will improve your upwind experience.
