Howdy from Kansas

Postby Lubrdink » Fri Mar 18, 2022 10:52 pm

Just got this beauty from a fine fellow in Iowa. A 14 hour drive and we got her home. No name yet but she’s a 1970 DS1, sail 4143. Joining the local yacht club and hope to have a great summer.
Great forum and I’ve learned a lot already?
We started sailing a Skipper Snipe in 08, then an O’day 20: and finally a Newport 27. Now we’ve downsized.

Welcome! My DS1 looks like a carbon copy of yours. It’s #4184, not far from your #, but the previous owner said mine was a 1969. Whatever the year we are near twins, but mine has the Fall River Massachusetts location on the plate. Enjoy!!

Before the advent of HINs a year or two after your boats, the dating of DS's can be variable. One source of uncertainty is that vessel licensing may simply have defaulted pre-HIN boats to 1970 or 1971 depending on the state. My '63 is registered as a '71 for that reason (it very clearly is not a '71 based on some of the design details and the sail number).

Also, not all sail numbers were awarded in sequence (that's been discussed here quite a few years ago, so happy spelunking among the older posts in the forum).

Now, with the HIN, all that stopped. (I guess, as long as the HINs were properly awarded based on build order, who knows what these boat builder people do ...)

Enjoy your boat.
