Hole through centerboard

Ok, so I took my DS1 off the trailer to remove the previous paint job. I thought it would be a good time to take the centerboard out and inspect it. As I removed it I got water dripped on me. Turns out someone drilled a hole through the centerboard which answered my question as to why there were filled holes on either side of the trunk. It looks like it was someone’s idea to put a pin through the trunk/centerboard to keep it in the up position. Guess it didn’t work out too well since the holes in the trunk were filled.

So moving the centerboard around I am able to drain most of the water that is in it, but I can still hear it moving around. It seems like there is material in there that is impeding the flow. So, what are the implications and how can I remove all the water? Is the centerboard supposed to be hollow?

Whoever it was had the right idea: you do want to support the CB during transport. (I've rigged my trailer so one of the rollers will hold the CB up).

The method chosen is rather fiddly and you need to seal the holes when not in transport as the trunk will spray water otherwise.

Now, some CBs are hollow and have two drain holes so they can fill when in the water and drain again when out. (Just a way to cancel what otherwise would be buoyancy from an air pocket).

If your CB has an interior maze, or a bit of foam filling, I can see that it might take a bit to get the water out. Other than drilling a drain hole at the lowest point and letting it hang for several weeks, I don't have any immediate suggestions.

Perfect, thanks for the information. I am glad to hear it’s not a bad situation. I will drill a hole in the centerboard that will be close to the lowest point when the CB is up in the trunk.
