replacing wood type

Postby Fly4rfun » Tue Oct 20, 2020 8:55 pm

My DS has some wood some missing and issues with some others. I have some White Oak, Oregon coast wood milled by me, I also have some poplar, both are rough cut. the oak 1/4grain cut, (vertical grain) its 25 years old. the question which would be best to use to replace what i need too. i would re-saw and plane to appropriate thickness. trying to save $ and not buying the teak or mahogany that is bad.

thanks

Poplar is rather prone to rot. White oak would be better, but probably not as good a the top level marine wood species. Still best to seal anything in epoxy.

I have much more Oak than poplar, had boards 22 in wide vertical grain.

I'm sitting here looking at a coffee table I made my Mother while a Jr in High School, it is a little worse for wear, when I'm gone it probably will be tossed. the idea came to use the wood for what i need. Transom trim and cockpit seats, possibly the wood on the cuddy lip from side to side

Before deciding on any wood species, be sure to look up whether it's rot resistant for outdoor/marine use.
