Centerboard installation orientation

Hello, All,

I’m about to reinstall the centerboard into my 1982 DS I (Spindrift). The CB was out when I bought the boat and needed repairs to the area where the handle goes through. The hole had been destroyed and I rebuilt it with the help of an experienced and very helpful next door neighbor.

Embarrassing question but I am new to this: which way does the CB go in? The pictures I’ve seen and my understanding of the physics involved suggest that the straighter, longer edge is the leading/fore edge. I’ve never seen it in place, so I want to be 100% certain.

Thanks,
Rush

You got it. Another way to tell is that the pivot point is closer to the leading edge, 6 inches. For the "definitive source", look here:

https://www.daysailer.org/resources/Documents/dsbylaw3.pdf

Section 6 has the details

The rulebook is a bit fuzzy on what's the leading edge, but it's the straight side as you mentioned. For what it's worth, here's my CB... upside down in a barn, when I was painting the hull. It's fully extended, so the long side of the slot is AFT:

Thanks, Tom! Nice job on the hull! That’s in my future at some point...

By the way, do I remember you mentioning in a post at some point you are in west Florida? Could be someone else on the forum here but I was thinking it might be you. If so we are close - I am in Lillian, just across Perdido Bay from Pensacola...

I think you're referring to John Almeida, aka jalmeida. I'm in North Carolina. I dream of gunkholing around Cedar Key one of these days, though!
