Metal Trim on Hull?

Postby TurnerPaige » Tue Oct 17, 2023 8:12 am

I’ve owned a DS 2 Manufactured January 1974 by O’Day, sail number 8954, for the last 3 years and have decided to refinish both the deck and hull over the Winter. I’d previously noted a raised line under the paint just about 3” below and parallel to the hull/deck joint. I started sanding and this appears to be a strip of metal trim about 1/2” wide that I have not seen on other DS2s. Is this typical? Is it just decorative? I’m not interested in exposing it, so should I consider removing it or just fair it out?

Does it go all around the boat?

It runs nearly the full length port and starboard, but near the bow there is a 10” gap, another short piece (maybe 12”) then it stops about 4” from the bow. The main reason I think it is decorative is the ends are tapered. > at the end and < at the beginning.

My pictures failed to load so I plan to reread the “how to upload images” posting again.

I've not heard of anything like that before. Is it metal tape or a real strip of metal that is embedded?

Anyway your conclusion seems right. This doesn't appear to have a critical function.

If you are repainting and the strip can be sanded you could paint over it but different rates of thermal expansion might cause problems. Still might be the way to go if you find it difficult to remove. Otherwise remove and fair any depressions.

I have a DS2 from 1985. The metallic band is just a coppery decal, you should be able to scrape it off with a little heat gun action. Or you could just paint over it again.

Mine has rubbed off in places:
