Reefing Help

Reefing Hook? Taking my sails to be evaluated this week, RE adding Reefing Points. (May be too old to Justify, perhaps time for new sails)

I am working on setting up the boat for reefing, and the Gooseneck on my boom is different than the one DR Marine currently sells, no way to add the Reefing Hook.

Can I simply throw a rope through the reefing point on the sail, and the loop on the gooseneck?

Pls Advise

A reef hook is not required. Any method you use to fix the reef point at or very close to the position of the tack would be fine.

Just be sure that it can not only hold the reef point down, but also keep it forward, so that you can set up proper horizontal tension between the two reef points to keep your reefed sail flat.

For the same reason, the reefline in the back is usually set up so that the leg going up to the reef point from the attachment point on the boom is pretty vertical, and the leg that goes to the cheek block at the end of the boom will be mostly horizontal when tight, pulling aft.

If you can swing it, go for the new sail.
