Easy answer: it is not.
Just roll your sails so that they are parallel to the battens (no twist in the batten) and all is fine.
I don't even remove my sail from the boom any longer, I just make a roll next to the boom and put both under a tarp while not sailing. The less a sail is handled, the longer it will live is my understanding of this. (And I really like to reduce the time spent rigging...)
