self-bailer has no ball

Postby BreezingUp » Sun Jun 04, 2017 5:09 pm

I'm looking to buy a 1982 Daysailer II. The self-bailer has no floating ball and the stopper plug has a bar that you fold down to seal it. I assume this is not the original plug for the unit, which I thought was a screw on cap. The current owner told me he bought the boat that way, and never used the self bailer. Anybody know why someone would have modified the self-bailer this way, and whether you can use it without the floating ball? I'm thinking of replacing the whole bailer, but I lack the mechanical skills to do it myself, so I'd have to take it to a boat shop.

That sounds exactly like the self-bailer that came on my boat, a 1983 O'day. The ball is still in mine. I believe the part that the plug is attached to just screws off and the whole unit pulls out from the bottom of the hull. I believe this is the same self-bailer that Rudy sells at D&R Marine. An easy fix, if the old one will come out easily! John

My 1976 DS II is missing the ball also. I just use a plug when the boat is in the water or sailing. I bought the replacement part from D&R Marine, but have not installed it yet.
