Making a rudder

Well, like a few other members on the site I am in need of a rudder for my DSII. I am considering making one and wondering if anyone has experience doing this. The Complete assembly from Idasailer seems just a bit pricey at $429. I guess my options are fashioning one from solid wood or covering plywood or foam with fiberglass. Any other options? Has anyone tried to make one out of an HDPE (high density polyethylene) blank. Any input would be helpful.
