Minn Kota 55-42 or Minn Kota 55-36 trolling motor

Postby jefflw » Wed Oct 08, 2008 5:01 pm

I am leaning towards buying a Minn Kota trolling motor for my DS3. The model with 55 lbs thrust seems to be discussed quite a bit on this site. Question is, it comes in a 42" and 36" shaft model. Since this will be mounted on the transom seems like 42" is overkill, unless you are standing. Anyone have advice?

Also looking for idea of what brand/model battery to purchase to power the motor. And where from?

Tx

FWIW, I have a DSI and am using a 40lbs Minn Kota Riptide (the saltwater version) with a 36" shaft (at least that's the dimension from the propeller axle to the bottom of the control unit).

I've never wished for anything longer than that, but I often wish I had gotten the extra 15lbs of thrust....

As for standing - I steer with the tiller anyway. I know the rudder would add a bit of drag, but I tend to use the motor mostly for short periods (docking, crossing a channel, under a bridge) anyway, so that shipping and unshipping the rudder is not an attractive proposition.
