Cuddy door plans for DSIII

Postby jefflw » Wed Feb 25, 2009 11:52 am

Im wondering if anyone has plans/dimensions for building a cuddy door for the DSIII. My model is from 1985 and has the larger cuddy opening. D&R Marine lists one for $149 made from teak (link below). If all else fails I may go for that, but I want to install one that can be locked.

I built a one piece lockable door for my DS II

e-mail me at roger02 att mts.net and I will send you some pics. Essentially, I built two side rails with a slot to accept the hatch. As well, I added a sloped lower sill that the door rests on, and the top of the door is flush with the cuddy roof, and has a lip that extends slightly forward to make it rain proof. I also added a louvered vent.

To make the pattern, I had a buddy hold a large sheet of cardboard from a furniture box over the outside of the cuddy opening, while I was inside and traced the outline of the hole. From this I worked up the pattern.

Part of the detail of the upper right portion of the door can be seen in this pic which is in the photo gallery.
