Can someone please advise me on the most preferred & safe method in the cleaning of sails?

THere are some that recommend washing them in the bathtub with a mild detergent like Dreft.

I've done that but I now send my sails to Sail Care - www.sailcare.com

They wash, restitch loose seams and reapply the resin. I had a ten year old sail that came back like new. They were able to remove the dirt, mildew, and even some adhesive residue.

Kokko, I got your PM about sailcare, and I'm intrigued. Once the weather gets too cold to sail, I'm definitely going to see about sending them in; maybe get reef points installed while they're at it (now that I just did find a reefing claw).

I can't say how the best way to clean sails would be, because I've had my boat for all of one month now, and I haven't even tried. My guess would be that something like sailcare would be better than trying to do it yourself. Certainly would be easier, and a lot more thorough.
