Value for a DSIII 1987 or 1988?

Regarding the DS3 only. Note that the DS3 is not a class-legal Day Sailer.

Value for a DSIII 1987 or 1988?

Postby irish7lad » Wed May 22, 2013 2:22 pm

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. I recently inherited my uncle's 1987 or 1988 DSIII with trailer. It came along with a camp that is in need of repair and a lake that is a bit small for this boat. The boat is in good shape, and I have no idea what to ask for it. I would love to get it in the hands of someone who is really into sailing, so just a roundabout fair price if anyone knows. Many thanks for helping. I'm in Maine incidentally.

The DSIII is a fine boat for sailing around in, but it is not a "class legal" boat, so anyone interested in racing boats would not be interested in it. That probably reduces the appeal slightly, but not all areas of the country have active racing anyway.

You provide no pictures for this boat, so there's no way to assess what you mean by "good shape". People without sailing experience might look only at the hull, but sailors would run a critical eye over all the fittings and whatever sails you have for this.

I would look at recent listings on this site and on other online sites to get an idea what other people are asking for DS1's and DSII's and then subtract a "racing bonus" from their prices.

Thanks very much Green Lake. I apologize for the lack of pictures, but it is under a tarp at my camp right now, I'm grabbing it later. I actually am a sailor, having grown up sailing this boat and an Enterprise for racing(if anyone even knows what that is anymore). I would say the hull is good to very good, the fittings, riggings, sails, etc are actually better than that. we have had this in the water three times in the last ten years and everything is really quite nice.

Thank you for steering me the right direction, I'll see what I can dig up. I was thinking 2K-2,500 initially....

I am looking at the same boat... the boat is listed at $3,500

I probably wouldn't 'class race' but I might want to race in some kind of handicap setting.... but I am not sure you could say: "lower the price because I want to race" though I get your point

Only way you can race this boat is in a "sail what you brung" kind of fun race, where there's no real handicapping, and the faster boats always win. The reason is that handicaps are usually based on the boat being class-legal. That said, here are places that host such informal events with some regularity, or you might start one where you are. I've been sailing in such an event for a while. They can be great fun and are great to get people together on the water in places where there are boats but not enough of one kind to make a fleet.

Or you take part in events like the Texas 200, which is not a race, yet very challenging and a DS3 would be a great boat.

Just as long as you are clear about the intended use you want to put it to.

Beyond that, for the price I would expect a boat where "good condition" was a bit of an understatement...definitely would expect it to be free of deferred maintenance and ready to take on the water for a full first season, at that price.

Because the picture isn't very good resolution nor does not show the rigging, or the interior, I can't tell what state this is really in (and at that price I would want to have look at it anyway in your place).

I would be interested in a DS3 hull in good shape, mine is pretty beat up (from the previous owned).

Moose: why don't you post this also in the WTB section?

Thanks for the recommendation GreenLake.

I have considered it, but you don't see them often and it's more of "if the opportunity presents itself" thing for me. But maybe I will.

Thanks

That's a fine looking boat. $3500 is what I paid for my first DS II. That was in 1989, and the boat was 10 years old at the time, in good condition. Considering inflation, $3500 is probably fair, if someone is looking for a DS III. The problem is that most people aren't, and O'Day DaySailers in general tend to go for less than $2,000. I suppose it's a problem for sellers, not for buyers. Let's keep this among ourselves. I am hoping for a clueless seller of a DS III on the west coast. Plus a discriminating buyer for Blue Moon who appreciates its Frankensailor qualities.

Yeah, in Maine. $1900, including motor. Some Down Easter is going to get themselves a nice boat.

Maybe someone will buy it, trailer it to Oregon, decide on the drive that they really wanted a Beneteau 58 to take to Tahiti, and abandon the DS in my driveway on their way to San Diego. (In which case, just park it next to the trailer.) One can always dream.

For better or worse I just paid $2495 for a 1987 DS III with trailer and a 2004 Yamaha 4 stroke 4hp. Boat is in very nice shape with a never used (still in package) hank on jib. The jib furler is included but the PO had removed it as the jib was frayed.

Sweet! That jib alone is worth ~$500, depending on its weight and who made it.
