WTB: Spinnaker for DS1

Postby Anstigmat » Fri Apr 15, 2022 3:43 pm

I'm looking for a Spinnaker for my DS1. Not racing, just want to play around with a sail type I've never used.

A friendly suggestion in case you're not able to find a sail here: there are other classes of dinghies that use comparable/compatibly-sized spinnakers. I got mine from a source like that and was later able to confirm the measurements fit with the official data from the DSA main website.

If you’re still looking I have a spinnaker. It’s been sitting in a bucket in my garage since I got it a couple years back and I don’t think I’ll ever use it. It does have some tape on it above the numbers but if you just want to fool around with it I’m sure it will work at least once :)

I also have the pole, it’s 70.5” long so not sure you would want me to send. It has clips on both sides, but the spring on one side is gone so the clip does not close.

If I told my wife, she’d probably pay you to take it. But since she doesn’t know, I would ask you pay for shipping and contribute to my beer fund. $20 would make me a happy.

If shipping is prohibitive for the pole, it's not that hard to make one. I used the kinds of fittings shown, bought a piece of bamboo that fit the diameter and bedded them with Marine Tex epoxy paste.

I also lightly wrapped the bamboo in epoxy and fiberglass which prevents cracking.

Mentioning this here in case it helps someone decide to take that sail off your hands.

Got my Whisker Pole for $15 locally, not bad!

Has anyone used it on the jib during a downwind run? I've seen 'big boat' people do that.

They have larger jibs.

However, if you can go wing-on-wing the DS is not doing to badly with just jib and main.

Note: a whisker pole is what you'd use to pole out a jib, as when you are going wing-on-wing, but it's not the same as a spinnaker pole. The latter are generally stronger, but the difference is not huge for a small boat.
