This was one hot regatta. Afternoon temperatures were in the 90's with a heat index reportedly over 100. The race committee decided to move the first gun to 10:30 on Tuesday and 10:00 on Wednesday and Thursday, with the intention of getting two races in before the temperature got too high. As it turned out we did not sail on Thursday because of the ongoing threat of severe weather.

The breeze on Tuesday was light. The top boats seemed to be able to sort out the velocity vs. direction puzzle and work their way around the course pretty well.

Wednesday arrived with better wind and two races were completed by just after noon. The RC sent us in for lunch. As the breeze continued to fill another race was scheduled for 2:30 pm. which turned out to be the best conditions of the regatta.

On Thursday, with five races completed and radar showing severe thunderstorms to the west, the RC decided to postpone. As the storms skirted Shreveport, we saw whitecaps on the lake, but the direction was changing so quickly that we could not have sailed a
fair race in it. As the storms dissipated, so did the wind, and the sixth race was abandoned.

The RC did a superb job on Tuesday and Wednesday. They shifted marks with the wind, ran Olympic courses when it got too light to run, and squeezed in the fifth race on Wednesday while conditions were at their best.

Andy Katz and the regatta committee, with the Shreveport YC team, put in a lot of hard work to prepare and it showed. Measuring went quick and smooth and they provided activities every night to keep us out of trouble.

For those who have not experienced the Shreveport YC hospitality, you missed a good time. Hot as it was the club is air conditioned, there are showers, camping, plenty of shade, and a pool to cool off in.

Best of all this venue brings together East and West. Four boats from Moro Bay, CA came as well as boats from Eugene, New England, Annapolis, Alabama, Texas, and Louisiana.

And did I mention Brazil? Our new champions are also the Brazilian national champions. Graziella and Rafael jumped in Phil Stuts' KatKantScratchIt and never looked back. They had good speed and played the shifts perfectly, and best of all they did it with grace and smiles, having fun all the while. Congratulations to them and I look forward to seeing them in Virginia in 2004.
