New England DaySailer Meetup. A weekend of sailing around Buzzards Bay with one night camping on the beach. It would be nice if we could stop in at Cape Cod Ship Building

Month:
The months to target is August or September. Any thoughts about the dates??? Thoughts?

Length of Meet Up:
It would be cool to make this into an overnight Fri/Sat or Sat/Sun, or Fri/Sat/Sun

Potential Routes:
We could go east to Falmouth / Woods Hole and somewhat around Gosnold. That's a good daysail if the winds are in your favor. I wouldn't target a round trip in one day, that's a lot for a DS. One thought for about lodging is to camp on the beach. Now If we didn't want to not go across the bay, we could start at Wareham and head down the coast. There are many areas to explore and dip into. I wouldn't go any farther than Wesport. Once you get into Westport the waves can get real high.

Potential Launch Sites

So Jason brought up this topic of a New England DaySailer meet up on a different thread about marketing http://forum.daysailer.org/forum/viewtopic.ph ... sc&start=0 . The topic kind of took on a life of its own and really kind of went off topic for the marketing thread. However, if you'd like to check out what brought this topic about you can scroll to the bottom of the 1st page and then from there check out the posts about getting together for a meet up.

The more I think about this the more I'm getting excited about it. I talked to a friend last night who is an avid sea kayaker and has paddled around that area quite a bit. He says it's really beautiful out there but just watch the currents. I guess it's famous for being hazardous through the "holes". Cuttyhunk, during the whaling era, was the home to pilots for the Buzzards Bay into New Bedford because it was so hazardous and tricky to navigate.

So, apparently one does need to plan around the tides but then we should get some assistance from the currents if we time it right.

So Jason, do we need to do some scouting cruises? :-)

Hi KC,

With respect to some of "holes", there are a number of holes to be aware of around Cuttyhunk and Woodshole. The one area we need watch out for if we decide to go east across the bay and go down towards Gosnold is Woods hole. The current there is very strong, to the point that without a very good wind behind you, and the tide not on your side you will not make it through. Many a sailboat have tangled with that section. We won't be going anywhere near that section. If you look at this video, you can see how fast the water is moving. This video is from a person standing in Wood hole looking at Gosnold.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6O270QpE2B0

With respect to the other holes to watch out for, there's Robinsons and Quicks hole. Same type of current as Woods Hole. And depending on your situation they're not so quick. We won't go near them.

The one current that's interesting is the current caused from the canal channel. Interesting because you can see how it will move you one way or the other. During races, people will sail past a mark, cross the and channel, and let the current drag them down so they can round the mark.

I'm up for some scouting cruises, my DS is ready to go. I just added a 3:1 mid-boom setup that i can't wait to try out sitting on the rail...

I'm open to go east, or down south. Both would be a blast with a bunch of DS's.

The more I think about it, the more I like it. Doesn't mean I'll manage to make it, but it's certainly worth thinking about.

Any takers for this activity. How about August 7, 8, 14 or 15? I'm cutting it down to just a long day sail.

Aug 7 & 8 is the Buzzards Bay Regatta weekend, many boats will be out that weekend.

There are many areas to duck into and explore. We can go north to Cape Cod Ship Building or south to West Island Fairhaven.

I could make it the 14th or the 15th. It would be fun to be there during a race weekend but I'll be up on Winnipesaukee. My boat is up in New Hampshire now but I could bring it back for that weekend.

I just got back from a week on Winnipesaukee of great sailing. It should be pretty amazing this week on Winnipesaukee for boats because it's Race Week up there. They bill it as "just like Key West Race Week but with a little more latitude!"

So what do you think Jason?

We don't seem to be getting a lot of response for these dates. Maybe more people would be around for a September date? Who knows?

My boat is up in New Hampshire and I'm headed there for a week starting tomorrow. I won't have Internet up there so I won't be checking to see what's going on with this get-together.

I'm trying to decide whether or not to bring my boat back from New Hampshire for the weekend of the 14th and 15th in case there is a get-together. I'd be taking it back up the following week if I did. So, it would be more convenient not to haul it.

If it's just you and me how does your September look? Could we get together then?

Hey KC,

I'm completely open to September and would gladly move this out if you're interested. I can do just about any Saturday or Sunday in September. How does 9/11, 9/12, 9/18 9/19 work for you?

Any thoughts on the route and launch point? I'm racing my Ensign on Wed, so i'll be out pretty far with a good vantage point. I can take some photos of where we could launch from to sort of chronicle to trip. Some simple teasers that might spur some interest. :D

Hey Jason, this all sounds good. Right now I'd say all of those dates look doable for me.

Yes, definitely take enticing photos! AND, best of luck racing your Ensign this weekend.

still in the middle of a mast re-fit, but i'd be interested later on in the month if I can re-launch.

I think both of the south end ramps are under construction as a note. but I dont think they charge for parking like most other ramps around.

A meet on the lower cape would be nice.

Although a mast refit on my DS2 kept me from meeting up in the past, I have a DS3 now. Hopefully, I am still welcome  . I plan on putting in on the 16th or 17th (just needs antifouling).

I would be in for a meet-up and maybe an overnight camp.

If you choose New Bedford:
The new Rodney french blvd. boat ramp is great and if we need to moor some boats overnight we might be able to work something out with the New Bedford CBC. Clarks Cove is a pretty low-traffic area where we could probably just anchor some boats and use a skiff to carry people to shore (near the end of Padanaram ave.) if we couldn't secure moorings.

Maybe we could do a sail with a mid-day lunch at a resturaunt with a dock? I can only think of davey's locker and the back eddy (proabably a good half day away, but pricey). I'm sure there are more.

Let's try to make this happen.

You sure are invited. :D

A New Bedford launch would work for me. There's a bunch of places we can go from there.

What if we targeted the month of July?

New Bedford (south end) is ideal for me because I moor there.

Any weekend in July should be OK as long as I can find someone to crew, I don't have any experience single handing. I'm sure that wont be a problem though. If it's just us we can cherry-pick the weekend for weather.

What are your thoughts for an overnight camp? I see you reccomended Gosnold, what is the legality of this? will we be ran out wih pitchforks and torches by the islanders? All of the islands are private except for Weepecket islands and Cuttyhunk (the large weepecket island looks big enough, check out http://sailingbuzzardsbay.frankgerry.com/?p=73). How safe is it for us to cross the bay?

I don't have any lights onboard either, which is not OK for over-night anchoring. I think a boat our size only needs a mast-top 3-way light, maybe I could rig something up. I've always wanted to do some sailing at night anyway.

Edit: realised you previously reccomended Gosnold.
