For those looking for challenge

Postby jeadstx » Fri Aug 22, 2014 11:30 am

The "Race to Alaska" was announced this week. http://racetoalaska.com/

750 miles from Port Townsen, Washington to Ketchikan, Alaska. A race for those who think the Everglades Challenge, Florida 120, Texas 200, etc. are too easy.

I didn't know about "Adventure Sailing" like this until I saw your posts on the Texas 200. It sounds like a blast!

The PDF section of the website has a story from the late 60s, I think, of a group of guys sailing a DS down the Gulf of California. More than a month trip if I remember correctly!

Given your experience, do you think a DS could do the Race to Alaska? Since other types of boats are allowed and they start sweeping the course after the first boat finishes, it seems like time is a big issue. I assume a canoe, rowboat, or kayak could finish first.

This one is a race like the Everglades Challenge, except it is 2.5 times longer and in colder water. The Florida 120 and Texas 200 are not races, but rather camp cruises with camping spots pre-determined along the way where everyone camps together. The R2AK race has no pre-determined camp locations, although there might be a couple checkpoints.

On the Everglades Challenge (EC) which takes place the first week of March, the sailboats (monohull and multihull) are usually the first boats to finish. On the EC they have different classes for different type boats (multihull, monohull, kayak with sail assist, kayak paddle only, etc). Day Sailers have competed successfully in the EC.

I think a Day Sailer could do this event. There will be a number of small sailboats the same size competing. Someone I know thinking of doing the R2AK said he would take a Goat Island Skiff which is about 15.5' LOA. He built the boat and sailed it on the Texas 200. The Day Sailer is a good boat and very capable. It also rows well when set up with oars. I'm interested to see the variety of boats that register.
