2014 Wurstfest Regatta

Postby jeadstx » Fri Sep 12, 2014 12:21 pm

The Wurstfest Regatta will be October 31st thru November 2nd. http://www.wurstfestregatta.com/index.p ... regatta-i/

If we can get 5 or more Day Sailers we can sail as our own class, otherwise we sail as part of the Portsmouth Dinghy class.

I just registered, making it two Day Sailers currently registered for the Wurstfest Regatta, one DS1 and one DS2 (mine). LCYC has changed the class rules for the race, 3 boats are now required to race as a class instead of 5 as in past years.

If you are a rookie can you just join in and sail(try) and enjoy being last or will we be embarrassed by all the gleaming white fiberglass and captains hats laughing at us. I love Wurstfest, we had a farm down there for 30 years and still consider ourselves "local", never did the sailing thing though because we were clueless power boaters then.
I bring nothing to the table.

Even if you don't consider yourself a "racer", taking part in a friendly gathering like that can be fun and a new challenge. You might well find your boathandling skills improved as a result of the quite different demands of navigating around marks and in traffic. Not to forget making contact with people sharing a common interest. So, anyone reading this (and close enough to get there) I'd encourage seabisquit to take up the friendly invitation.

For one thing, I reserve the right to be in last place amongst the Day Sailers. We now have three Day Sailers registered so we now qualify as our own fleet, we would like more. We will sail with the Portsmouth Dinghy fleet course, but be ranked as our own class.

Seabisquit, I would encourage you to participate. One DSII that registered today has never raced before either. We sailed our boats together on Sunday. It is a good event and is hosted by Lake Canyon Yacht Club. For boats arriving Friday afternoon/evening they provide a dinner/beer/soft drinks/tea. Launch your boat and tie up on their dock. Participants can camp out on the grounds if they wish to, many do. There are hot showers and restrooms available to those camping out. Saturday night there is a dinner (1 ticket provided with the registration, additional tickets can be purchased for crew or others, $12 each), there will be a band and party. There will be racing Saturday and Sunday. The courses are short. They try to get 7 races in over the two days. Usually with all the classes of boats there are about 75 to 80 boats. I'm not a serious racer, I go out there to have fun and enjoy myself sailing with other boats, especially other Day Sailers. As Greenlake says, you will improve your boat handling skills.

I will be out there to rig and launch on the afternoon of Friday October 31st.

As a bonus, the race commitee will get some great pictures of your boat sailing. Remember, I will be the Day Sailer furthest back.

That sounds like a lot of fun. Being a rookie in that kind of gathering can be intimidating ... when I joined a local fun race that can field upwards of 100 boats I remember that I made about every rookie mistake possible and some stupid ones on top of that.  I found that people were really accommodating and from jeadstx' description it sounds like the people there are really welcoming.

It helps to sit down the night before with some of the more experienced sailors and talk through step by step what will happen before each race and at the start. Then hang back on your first race or two and try to follow. After that, you should get the hang of it.

My crew backed out on me Wednesday afternoon. Anyone interested in sailing with me at the Wurstfest Regatta.

All fees are already paid, dinner Saturday night, breakfast Saturday and Sunday mornings, lunch provided both days as well. Camping available on-site (Lake Canyon Yacht Club) with hot showers. There will be a party Saturday night, free beer. If intereseted you can call me at 5-one-2 seven-8-seven 4-three-7-seven.

Currently there are 50 boats registered overall in about 6 fleets with our Day Sailer fleet consisting of four boats.

The results of the Wurstfest Regatta are posted here: http://www.regattanetwork.com/clubmgmt/ ... ta_id=9004
There were four Day Sailers, two DS1s and two DS2s. Since we had more than three boats, the Day Sailers got to sail as their own fleet. The DS1s took 1st and 2nd place. My DS2 took 3rd place and the other DS2 took 4th place. The boat that took 4th place, this was the first time he had ever raced. They said they enjoyed it and learned a lot from the experience. Neither DS2 had a spinnaker, whereas both DS1s did. The wind was about 10 knots on Saturday with some gusts. Sunday the wind was closer to 20 knots.

Late on Wednesday afternoon before the race, my crew dropped out. I was able to find crew Saturday morning. He was good at helm and with my weight forward we were able to get good boat trim and improved boat performance over last year. The barber haulers I installed in 2013 helped our pointing a lot. Although we took 3rd place in the 5 races we sailed Saturday, on the first race, my boat rounded the first mark ahead of both DS1s. The DS1s then pulled out their spinnakers and left us behind.

There were going to be two races on Sunday and I was unable to find crew and could not participate. The winds were around 20 knots on Sunday. Both DS1s and the other DS2 headed out to the coarse. Before the first race, one of the DS1s came back in, I don't know the reason, I heard there might have been some minor damage. A few other boats from the other classes came in early as well due to damage from the wind. Canyon Lake can have some odd wind patterns due to the high hills around the lake. Turned out that due to the wind, they only ran one race on Sunday for the Day Sailers.

While de-rigging, the crew of the DS1 that won 1st place noticed a large crack in their mast at deck level just after they got their mast down. The crack ran from the sail slot forward. Had they been out longer in the high winds they might have lost their mast.

Thanks for the report. I have done this regatta before on a Sunfish. It is a good one! I'll try to make the haul from New Orleans for next year.
