Yes, I also carry spares and tools aboard at all times, not just on the longer trips. This includes enough 1500 lb Spectra to make an entire (temporary) set of stays if need be. Not sure what they have aboard along those lines, but if the hinge got damaged when the mast came down, it would be a tall order to fix that while out in the boonies.

The fact that they needed a tow tells me that they don't have oars aboard, at least I didn't see any in the pics of the boat at the start. That or they just couldn't make any headway rowing or paddling in those high winds they were in.

Since they got a tow, I guess they are a DNF. I didn't see any oars either from the picture of the boat on the beach. I think I did see a paddle in one picture somewhere. I have found that rowing a Day Sailer is easier than paddling it over a long distance. Paddling or rowing into a stiff wind could be rough.

Haven't heard any more about them, so I guess they are out of it ... 8~(

However, Flamingo is not really a bad place to be if your EC is over! I can think of a lot worse places ... ;-P

They have a DNF shown in the results for CP3 at Flamingo.

I would have liked to see the Day Sailer make it to the finish.

I see from looking at the final results that only about 30% of all classes racing finished the race. The rest dropped out due to either damage, fatigue, or just not being able to make the check points on time for each leg of the race. Well, I guess I can still watch the results of the 1200 mile Ultimate Florida race and see how many are left at the end of that.

Mistermoon posted that they broke a shroud, and had FG damage when the mast came down.

This year's EC seemed like a pretty normal, average year in terms of conditions and numbers of finishers. The first two days were a sleighride, then all hell broke loose!

Yup, I'll be keeping an eye on Jarhead, and will try to get over to the ICW to root him on as he passes this area.

Yea, I saw Mistermoon's FB post explaining what happened to Millarkey. Not too surprised they couldn't make repairs.

Jarhead is the one that I have been watching the tracking on. As I recall, didn't he sail over 400 miles to start the race before starting the 1200 mile race?

Yup, he's the one. His real name is Bill Fite, and he's an ex-Marine (I know - no such thing) in his 70's who's in better shape than most 20-year-olds I know. He left the Florabama on the morning of 25 Feb, and arrived at Ft. DeSoto with one day to spare. He arrived at Key Largo on the 9th and left there on the 11th. He's currently just North of Jupiter Inlet and makin' tracks!

Yes, he seems to be doing well and for once the tracking map has worked well (although his icon doesn't always show up for me). Looks like two boats are ahead of him.

I know a couple of other challengers left KL before Bill, but I think at this point he's just trying to be the first to sail the entire coastline of FL solo ...

Trackers are here:

http://watertribe.com/Events/ChallengeGMapper.aspx

and here:

The WT tracker is working much better now that folks are only following about 6 boats, not 100! ;-P

I think most of the sailboats switch over to kayaks (or similar boats) at the north end where they need to make a 40 mile portage.

I saw that two boats reached the second stage checkpoint ahead of Jarhead.

Jarhead is solo this year, but last year he and his crew did switch from the Sea Pearl to another boat. It was a smaller, lighter sailboat if I recall. Not sure what his plans are this year when he reaches the St. Mary's.
