2003 Day Sailer North American Championships

Postby Bob Hunkins » Wed Mar 12, 2003 8:57 pm

Greetings fellow Day Sailers!
We have instituted a website for the 2003 North American Championship Regatta to be held at the Shreveport Yacht Club, June 22-27, 2003.

At the time of this posting, the web site has the text from the Notice of Race, but we plan to have more information presented there in the near future.

Please go to:
http://www.shreve.net/~yacht/daysailornas.html

I hope that you will consider coming to the NACs this year, it's a great time and a wonderful way to meet folks from across the country who love this sailboat! Plus, the Shreveport Yacht Club is a great place to spend a few days sailing and socializing! I hope to see you there!
-Bob Hunkins
DSA Executive VP

P.S. The Southwest Region also has it's championship at Shreveport YC at the Holiday in Dixie Regatta in late April. If you're in the area, I encourage you to come out!

Forwarded message from NAC regatta chairman, Andy Katz:

Dear Day Sailer Association Member,

The NACs are only eight weeks away and I wanted to make sure that we are communicating with everyone. We have a lot of exciting news, so I may send you a few emails over the next month. First and foremost, I want to make sure that everyone has the basic information about the NACs. The Winter quarterly contained a booklet with all the scoop, however, some people still have not received it. Or you may have received it and misplaced it. Not to worry, we have created a website with the same information. The site is a subpage of the Shreveport Yacht Club site. You can check it out via this link http://www.shreve.net/~yacht/daysailernas.html or via the link we have on the DaySailer.org homepage. The main page of the NAC site has the welcome letter from the brochure, the Notice of Race and Detailed Information page has the remainder of the brochure info.

There are a few things you should note about the Web site as it has some corrected information
1. Sponsoring Hotel
- The phone number for our sponsoring hotel, the Holiday Inn Express, is 318-631-2000
- The rates for the Holiday Inn Express are lower. You can get a fully cancelable rate of $67 by calling the number listed above. Or you can get a rate of $58.80 from their website which is linked from our NAC page. However, this rate is non-refundable and requires a 21 day advance purchase.
2. If you want to arrange for a crew or for a boat to charter contact Kevin Williams, his email address is sailin2day@gbronline.com his phone is 817-496-4564.
3. The registration process is now online!
- Via the SYC site you can register online and separately mail them a check.
- Via the Layline site, one of our regatta sponsors, you can register online and pay with a credit card. Layline will forward the money and information to the SYC.
- Of course if you still want fill out the paper form in the brochure and mail it in the old fashioned way we'll do that too.
- You can see who else has registered on the skipper's page.
4. We have links to the SYC home page from which you can see pictures of the club and get a feel for why we love it there. Most of the pictures were taken in the winter. It is much better in the summer. I will be there this coming weekend for our Regionals and I'll take some greener shots.

Coming up in the next email
- Sunsail's sponsorship of our regatta
- Pictures of the Trophies
- Info about T-shirts
- Registration update
- Day Sailer coozies

The people at Shreveport are so excited to be hosting us and they are doing a great job. They did the website for us, helped us source the trophies and shirts, and even created the logo. All we need to do is show up in record numbers, early indications from Oregon and Midwinters are that a lot of people are coming. If you have any questions at all please contact me at aekatz1@ix.netocm.com or at 817-451-7830

Thanks, Andy

Day Sailers,

Sunsail has graciously agreed to sponsor our North American Championship regatta. They have given us a one week vacation charter in the fabulous British Virgin Islands for half price! The boat is an Oceanis 321, the charter is valued at up to $2,000.00. You can find more details about the charter below in this email. You can also find lots of great information and pictures on the Sunsail Website http://www.sunsail.com/brochure/bareboa ... ode=chbvto. The charter is good for one year and is upgradeable to other Sunsail fleet yachts.

We will auction the charter off at the NACs. The auction is open to any Day Sailer Association Member. You do not have to be present at the regatta. The minimum bid will be $1,000.00. The bidding starts immediately. Any DSA member can submit a bid by sending an email to Andy Katz at aekatz1@ix.netcom.com. We will post the current high bid amount on our NAC website at http://www.shreve.net/~yacht/daysailernas.html. At the banquet at the NACs we will have the final live auction starting with the high bid at that time. We will allow serious offsite bidders to participate in the final live auction via onsite cell phones. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Thanks, Andy Katz

- The Charter is for seven nights
- Oceanis 321 has two double cabins, ideal for two couples or one family
- Upgrades to a larger boat are available for an additional fee
- This offer does not include airfare or provisioning
- This offer does not include the yacht damage waiver of $25 day
- Valid for vacations before June 30th, 2004 subject to blackout dates of 12/20/2003-1/4/2004 and 4/3/2004-4/18/2004
- There is a signed certificate which must be presented at the time of booking to redeem the charter vacation offer.

Here's an article on the NACs. The brazillians are nice folks and sailed a chartered boat extremely well!

Brazilian duo takes race on Cross Lake

Graziella Tussatto and Rafael Gagliotti, both of Brazil, sailed their boat almost flawlessly over five races to win the Day Sailer North American Championship at the Shreveport Yacht Club on Cross Lake.

The three-day event wrapped up on Thursday with the sixth and final race called off because of threatening weather. The minimum of three completed races allowed the five-race results to be final.

"We are so happy," Tussatto said.

She was surprised but delighted at their best finish ever in a North America race.

"We did an impossible thing for us. Our friends in Brazil are so happy for us."

It was the second national event in less than a month for the local yacht club, which has been attracting sailing competitors from all over the country. Last month, Cross Lake was a mural teeming with sailboats, as the club played host to the MC Scow National Regatta.

"The guys are very good," the skipper Tussatto said of her competition in the race. "We don't expect this[to win]. We worked all the time for keeping a good position."

Tussatto and her best friend Gagliotti, the boat's crewman, finished with just six points in a competition where the fewest points yield the highest results.

The winners put together two one-point races and a pair of two-point races in the Day Sailer, a 17-foot dingy built for two. Even their worst race of three points was among the better races in the 21-crew contest.

Phill and Bryan Root finished with two straight one-point races to bring up second at just two points behind the winners. Rob Bonney and Mary Heimer were third, while Mike and Mason Waters came in fourth.

Sam Trahan and skipper Andy Katz finished ninth, opening with a five-point race on Day 1, but falling back with an 18-pointer in race three. Trahan, from Lafayette, was the lone Louisianian in the race. He works as an insurance trainer but enjoys running into friends out on the sailing circuit.

"Some of these guys have been sailing these boats for thirty years-I've been in the class for twenty five, so it's a common bond. And they like the Louisiana flair for things."
