I do three things.

(1) I use normal attachments. The user sees a preview, that may be clipped, with scroll bars. If a user clicks on it, they are shown the full size image.

(2) I use gallery pictures. They are represented by small thumbnails. If a user clicks on one, they are shown the full size image, as posted in the gallery. (There's a size limit to gallery pictures, so you need to use image editing software to prepare - check the earlier posts in this thread for more details).

(3) I experimented and found the largest image that I could attach without scroll bars. I sometimes use attachments that are sized to that the full image is visible. This works best for images with little detail, such as diagrams. (See my thread on "Basic Concepts and Techniques" under "Seamanship and boat handling").
