Waiting for the next installment!

Reminds me of "Riddle of the Sands" where they lose a jib overboard coming into port in a blow and the guy takes out ruler and compass and works out where on the beach he might find it...

(Probably in one of the movie versions, not the book).

Well, I wish I had something new to report, but I could not make it by the club this weekend, and neither could my partner in crime. He went up to middle Georgia to compete in a race, and I put more flooring in over at my parents house, lol. We do have a pact that one of us has to get pictures of the buried treasure once it comes ashore, lol. Hopefully next weekend :D

This is true... and it is still sitting on the floor of the sea. It is crazy to look out there every time I am at the club and that throwable PFD is still floating around attached to the ramp's railing underwater. The construction crew has not made it that far out yet. We had hoped to get them to lift it out with the machine that they are driving pilings in with.

Speaking of pilings, they have got a little bit of the main dock built, but not really useable. The club opted to save some money and build over the old dock (vs removal). So the main dock is kind of high, and we will have to build some lower dock to accommodate all the small boats we have. Last weekend we installed a floating dock on the south side of the ramp (the main dock in on the north side of the ramp). That floating dock is totally separate from the main dock, and it is made of some plastic type material, that breaks apart for easy removal from the water. It also has wheels, so if we have a storm we can roll the pieces up to the clubhouse.

Here is a funny one for you. So, we built a wooden portable floating dock (if that is what you would call it, it is probably better to call it wooden mini barge). Point is that this thing can be transported around the water to use for doing work. We used it this weekend to float the engine out into the river that pumps the water through the blower that we used to set the pilings for the new floating dock we installed on the south side of the ramp. Piling s are heavy... real heavy. We rolled the pillings (one at the time) onto the floating utility "barge thing" and walked it out to the spot we were to sink it in. Slid it off and pushed them upright, and start blasting to sink them. The first one went smooth the second one not so much... for me, lol. You have 2 guys on the new floating dock holding the piling upright. Me on the utility barge holding the other side. The there are 2 guys holding the line for the utility barge to keep it from drifting. Well, one of the guys decided to take a mental break while we were setting the pilling, and my feet suddenly started drifting further and further away from me  . Once I was about to be forced to a horizontal position I decided to jump for it to the new floating dock, but landed falling backwards, so I immediately took another spinning jump to the barge to turn myself back around. Well, I am less than "cat like" apparently. I hit the side of the barge and went in the river, lol. I should have know better, but I never took my phone out of my pocket. I should have changed into swim trunks and had on my sailing shoes, ready to get wet. Problem is that I did not know I was going to end up on the barge until I ended up on the barge. Anyway, I am ok, and it is funny now it is in the past. I am just thankful they did not drop the piling... on me

Crazy times on the weekend around the 'ol Rudder Club ;)

Once we get that ramp out, I will get some pics and post up ;)

Great writeup Paul, and glad to hear repairs are well underway, even if you had to take an unintentional swim ...

Know a guy who lives on Lake Winnemisett near Deland, and he built what is basically a floating patio deck, complete with outboard attached, shade canopy, multiple coolers, etc. Calls it the Deckadence. ;-P

lol. That's awesome. We would have to have room for turntables and a DJ, then it would be a floating dance floor. Call it Deck-a-Dance, lol :D

I should probably grab some pictures of the crazy stuff we have going on repair wise. It is kind of neat to be a part of it. You learn a lot about your surroundings, and gain a lot of respect for all the little things that go into creating accommodating access to the water. If the people that lived around here only had to spend a day working on some of this stuff, maybe they would trash the water less. City life...

Def post some pix if you can. Would love to see the progress you guys are making. Maybe the storm was something of a blessing in disguise, and the club will end up with a better facility by the time it's all said and done?

I was out there today, working on a "new to me Catalina 22", but the dock builders were gone. No barge, no pile driver, no nothing. I guess I could have snapped a picture of our floating dock we installed, but think I will wait until the weekend when more action is going on

Will do. I saw him momentarily after the hurricane, but did not get to talk to him. Haven't really seen him since. Next time I do see him though I will tell him you said hello!

I was down at the club again today (I'm apparently a junky, lol). The dock crew has not made much progress and of course was not in sight today. Funny thing is that I was talking to the office manager, and she was a little concerned about the progress as well. They were supposed to take care of there main strip of dock in 30 days. Well, there are only 6 days left, lol. Here are a few pictures to help paint the picture of what is going on. Will get more when the pile driver returns. That thing is cool... :D

Shot of the northern main dock. You can see the new piling at the start of the dock are much higher. They are also wrapped with a protective plastic to keep creatures from eroding them. Juste need some decking and we could use it.

Wooden barge I was operating the piling blaster off of. And consequently took a plunge into the river jumping back and forth from to the floating dock, lol.

Floating dock we installed on the south side of the ramp. Now we can tie boats up after lunching without a swim!

Strange they have started the decking way out from the shore. Would it not be much more efficient to lay the deck starting at the shore so material could be walked out? What do I know? lol
