Trying to organize a fleet on Canyon Lake Texas

Postby Kleanbore » Sun Feb 20, 2011 1:08 am

I recently became a member of the Lake Canyon Yacht Club (on Canyon Lake, TX between San Antonio and Austin) and would like to organize a DS fleet. Looking through the membership directory there are at least 5 members listed with Daysailers, and I have emailed each of them to see if there is interest in forming a fleet. I know there are at least 2 members of this forum who live near Canyon Lake. If there are more DS sailors out there who are interested in sailing in the monthly series races, please let me know. It only takes 3 boats, but the more the merrier! We would probably share the start with Flying Scots, so it promises to be a great time.
Anyone in?

Kerry,

I'm interested in forming a fleet on Canyon Lake.

Hope you guys get a fleet! if there's anything the rest if us in the southwestern region can do to help let us know!
Come down for North Americans in Houston! Best chance to learn about these boats!

We're looking at having regionals in Shreveport in April.

I love sailing Wurstfest, looking forward to it in October, maybe we can have a one design fleet!

Good luck to you all. I second Bob's offer to help.
I'm looking forward to Wurstfest as well and let's plan on meeting then.

Thanks for the help guys, I am sure we will be talking. I sailed Wurstfest last year - first weekend I crewed on a Flying Scot, second weekend I crewed on the J/92 "Atlas Shrugged" which we won the spinnaker class. This year I want to sail my boat.
As of tonight, I don't have any responses yet from the club members with DS boats, but I hope to have another run at it in the next club newsletter. Flying Scots are definitely the most popular board boat on Canyon Lake, so if I can't get a fleet together for the monthly series I can always sail Portsmouth and spar with the faster FnS at the start line and hang on as long as I can up the first beat. My sails are not race worthy, but we'll get there one step at a time.
I also hope to sail at the NACR in Houston, although I know the boat and I are far from ready to have goals higher than not finishing DAL.
Thanks!

I haven't heard or seen the abbreviation "DAL" before, can you enlighten me to its precise meaning? Google only knows about Indian food.

I haven't either, but I suspect that when it's spelled out, there's a hyphen between the D and the A. :)

Ahh, mystery revealed. :)

I can sympathize with the sentiment, though.

The first race I ever sailed in (early 70's) I was DAL. Got a tropy for it too. A crushed Michelob can mounted on a wooden base and a plaque with the appropiate wording. The way I look at it, if I had been second to last, I wouldn't have had anything.

It looks like we will have 4 boats in the DS fleet on Canyon Lake. I would like to shoot for the Summer Series which begins the Sunday following the second Saturday in June. We were out on my boat today in great weather and the boat moved along quite well. As is typical on Canyon Lake, we saw some 120 degree wind shifts, but we had a great day. One of the other boats on the lake took some pictures of us hiked out and I will post those when I get them.
I plan to organize a few days on the lake where we can get the DS boats together and test our boats and our skills.
Since this will initially be club racing, we won't need official measurements, but, for the Houston fleet, how do we proceed with getting boats measured?
Thanks!

Kerry - Congratulations on your new fleet!
Tentative schedule is weighing/ measuring boats for the NACR on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday mornings 6/19,20,21. Check your class handbook for requirements. Bob H. can provide more details.
