Tiller tamer attempt

Postby Fly4rfun » Sat Nov 21, 2020 4:58 pm

I tried to duplicate/copy Greenlakes tiller tamer. I think my tiller has been replaced as it's nowhere as close to the bungee as his. the tiller needs replaced, I had planned on building one making it 6-8 inches longer, any ideas about this one. is the profile correct?

I replaced my tiller a few years ago. I bought it at D&R Marine. The length was 48 inches. The same length has the original tiller. I have found by using a tiller extension(hiking stick) I can trim the sails without locking the tiller. I do have a tiller clutch to lock the tiller but seldom use it. Just my feelings on locking the tiller, it works better on heavier displacement boats. When I shift my weight with the tiller locked It will not hold my course. It is good for grabbing a drink or peeing in the bucket.

Looks good. Run the bungee underneath and then wrap it with some length of thin bungee material to the underside of the tiller, so that when you steer, the wrapper has to slide along the yellow bungee.

are you saying that you have that much distance before lashing it to the tiller?

It's a bungee. It stretches. What does it matter?

My tiller is horizontal.

Yours seems to rely on a missing spot in the rear coaming to be able to go level. That would point to your rudder sitting lower than it should be, or the pivot bolt for your tiller sitting lower than it should.

I think someone rebuilt or replaced this one as the slot the rudder fits into is against the rudder and wont go down farther

May be. But what's supposed to happen is that the tiller sits horizontal. From your photos it looks like yours angles up when not in the forward position?

I am not familiar with the forward position, are you referring to the handle pointing forward?

Garry, that seemed obtuse even for you :)

The tiller points forward when it's at zero degrees deflection.

Sorry wasn't trying to be, thought maybe there might be a pivot at the stern mounts on the rudder that lets the blade tilt, not sure why but I did.( I think I've been in WV to long) :? I'll catch on eventually. I think of it as centered,
