I just repainted the hull using that method. I used a water-based PU paint (from System Three). What I learned was to have more than one brush for tipping - because it works best when the brush is dry and clean - after a while it will load up and in my experience work less well. Also, having a really high quality brush, using really light touch and figuring out the correct amount of thinning - all are crucial. With the water-based stuff, we could use a fine mist after rolling to help when the paint wanted to dry too fast. Harder to do it you use solvent based stuff.

If you make a mistake, you can just repeat the rolling right away and start over with the process.

I recently purchased Hull number 276. she looks very much like something between a ds1 and a ds2. I like the open cuddy, and the use of a fiberglass hollow beam to support the cabin roof and mast step. the floor seems really solid and firm throughout. Edit: the floors appear to have a continuous wood core as well as the seats.. the mast seems to be a bit of a noodle which might help flatten the main with mast bend under higher winds. mast is 2" x 3" and 22' 6". boom it 10'. I havent sailed her yet. the rudder blade appears to have been lost and replaced with a smaller wooden one. Edit: the rudder blade appears to have been mounted the wrong way, fipping it over and tightening the pivot bolt and it is working well.. Another unique thing is that the centerboard appears to be entirely removable from the bottom of the boat with a stainless bracket with 3 screws on each side of the pivot area going up into the hull. She sails well and is relatively stiff in a breeze. Centerboard itself broke on my third sail, so it will need repair now

we do have a small handicap fleet at our lake, i might race her as a ds if i get some ds sails or as a discoverer phrf rating. Update: I think daysailer sails fit and work well on this boat as replacements.

P.s. I think mine is more comfortable with the seat back coaming boards removed. The seats benefit from the added depth, and it feels more "sporty"

Nice. Making your own rudder blade isn't all that complicated. Look for the thread on rudder rebuilds in the repair/improvement section for ideas.

I know this is an old thread, but curious about your centerboard repair. My centerboard broke where it exits the hull in the down position, it broke clean off. The boat still sailed and I was able to retrieve the board at the end of the sail, since it was attached still to the lifting pennant.

Please report back in a year or two as to how well that paint is holding up and how much exposure it's getting.

I had a paint that I really liked the looks of, and it failed dramatically for no reason I could ever determine.

With painting 99% of the effort is in the prep. So it's a huge gamble to use a paint that doesn't have a track record. Because then you'll have to redo all that work.

However, if you can help us establish an experience based track record, I'm sure people will love to hear about it, so please report back.

We only occasionally get posts on the various DaySailer clones; people come and ask a question or report on some project, and then wander off again. None of the early posters have logged into this forum in quite some time, but is is possible for someone to read along without logging in. Still, for all intents and purposes, the forum participants come and go over time.

Feel free to engage on other topics here; much about sailing these small boats is not specific to a given model or version of a boat. So, look at the "Seamanship and Boat handling" section for tips on how to handle your boat, or the "Rigging" section if you have a question on the best rope and diameter for your jib sheet. For example, the posts that were specific to the paint suggestion on this thread would have fit nicely as a standalone topic in the "Repairs and Improvement" section.

We just ask that anything having to do with specifics unique to the design of the Discoverer be shared in this "Miscellaneous" section, just as we ask people to post model-specific issues for the DaySailer in their appropriate section.

Well, we finally are finished painting. Five coats of blue and three coats of black of Rustoleum Top Coat marine paint. It actually turned out great! Very shiny.

Just wondering what your experience was with the Rustoleum Marine Topcoat paint job and how long it lasted and all of that. In your 2008 pictures it looked wonderful. Just curious about how it did on the water and on the trailer over the years.

Actually, since this is a 16 year old set of posts the original poster is probably gone. Have others any experience with Rustoleum Topside Marine paint on a hull under the water line in fresh water and on a trailer? I like the idea of an affordable paint but if it makes a mess that's worse than expensive paint.
