I've been told this is a ~1978 O'day that 17'. The seller knows little else.

This looks like an O'Day DaySailer 1. The DaySailer is 16' 9" (often listed as 17').

The side view shows that there's a logo on the side of the cuddy. That should help confirm matters.

If there's no HIN (Hull identification number) on the boat, it would have to be pre-1971. If it's truly a '78, there would have to be HIN plaque with the standard HIN number (11 digits?). If so, that would give you year and manufacturer.

Looks like it's been used for racing, it seems to have all the rigging (as well as hiking straps) and the wooden coamings have been cut down to the deck level, to make hiking easier.

Have you purchased it or are you still thinking about it? In either case, check out the rest of the forum here for info on the DS1, typical repairs, rigging and sail questions.

Thanks for all the great information. It is a boat that I am potentially going to look at as it is semi-local (about 1.5 hrs away). The person selling it didn't know much (it came with the house they bought). I primarily want a recreational boat for sailing with the family.

Question: What is the box-like opening on the port transom for?

Thanks,

Bart

That's the outboard well. If you clamp an outboard to the transom at that point, then the head of the outboard more or less fits in the well when you tilt it up. Also catches any nasty spills.

Looks like a great boat, if the price is right then go for it! From the way that the lines are set up under the cockpit, this was definitely used for racing. That's generally a good thing as most racers set their rig up for efficiency. But the DS1 rigging is so easy to change, I wouldn't worry about it. As you sail the boat, you'll learn what you might want to change. And this forum is here to help.

OTOH, the sails are probably beat to death. Soft as a diaper. Fine for casual sailing, but budget yourself for new sails in the next year or so. For now, it's just a point that you can use for haggling the price down! Good luck :)

Fair winds,

Tom
