Jib luffing when sailing close-hauled

Postby Wyatt » Sun Sep 02, 2007 5:57 pm

Greetings:

I'm having a problem since I tuned this boat, redid the hull and built a foil when sailing close to the wind. The boat is performing much better close-hauled, but when I really push the limit the jib will start flapping even though the mainsail is still powered. My jib is new, from Linthicum Sails in NJ and I think it's a pretty good sail. The dims. are 7-0 foot, 14-10 luff, and 13-0 leach, and so it is within regs, but I'm wondering whether the foot may be a little long because I've also noticed curling when sailing on a beam reach and don't know whether this is correct. Any advice would be appreciated.

move the jib car back further. You are likely pinching to the wind too much, bear off slightly to improve footing.

Thanks Roger. Tried it out yesterday and it seems to make a difference.
