Sage advice needed!

Postby albanysailer » Thu Sep 18, 2008 1:06 pm

We have been looking at joining a sailing club now for a little while and have been invited to try the club out this Sunday and participate in one of their races!
So, never having raced my DSII before, let alone any boat, I turn to all of you for any tips or tricks that you'd like to bestow upon me.

Here is the club's link:

They sail a lot of ensigns, but have some other fleets as well.

Thanks!

First Race

I would suggest that you let the RC and other sailors know that it is your firs race. I am sure people will lend a hand where they can to get you up to speed.

Key concept is that you are doing this for fun!

I would recommend reading through the rules. Knowledge builds confidence!

You may want to keep clear at the first start and sail your own race while observing how other sailors are racing. If it is a large starting line then go to the empty end and start on your own. You just don't want to put yourself in a position where you unknowingly foul someone as it will not be fun for you or them.

I am sure that you will pick up on it pretty quickly. Racing is very social and you will find many other sailors will be more than helpful and glad to have you join the fleet.
