VMG and GPS

I've been thinking about buying myself a GPS for the boat. It seems like something handheld and at least water resistant makes sense. Of course, I've been doing some research online and am considering a Garmin 72H. I don't need mapping. Actually, I don't really even need a GPS it just would be fun.

One of the things that I found while researching that seems like a fun idea is how to optimize your VMG by using a GPS. Here's one article that I thought was great http://www.wingsailor.com/html/vmg___gps.html .

Interesting article.

I use a DeLorme PN-40 for my navigation needs. It has kept me on coarse for the Texas 200 for the last 3 years and has survived being in the water (both salt and fresh). Battery life using Lithium AA has been 9 to 12 hours continous use. I've read that the newer PN-60 has better battery life. The screen can be read in bright sunlight (without backlight) which I find to be a plus. I have a 4gig SD card in it to store my Navigation data on.
