Hi All.

We are thinking of buying either a Subaru Forester or Outback (both 4-wheel drive). Does anyone have experience or info on their towing capacities? We have a DSI and a Karavan trailer, of appropriate size. Thanks.

The Subaru Forester and Outback will definitely tow more than a light utility trailer. Although the info varies slightly both the Outback and Forester are rated for 2,000 lb tow capability up to a 2002 model year and the newer ones are rated at 2,400 lbs for the Forester and 2,700 lbs for the Outback. Again, these numbers vary slightly depending on the source.

Both should easily handle a DS or light to medium travel trailer. Generally most of the weight rests on the trailers wheels. The tongue weight of the DS may be more than the travel trailer even though it is likely that the DS/trailer package is lighter. This is due to the position of the DS on the trailer. Most of the weight of the DS is forward with the cuddy. Tongue weight really shouldn’t be a problem. If you can physically lift the trailer tongue by hand it should be light enough.

Performing some preventive maintenance on the trailer’s wheels will help reduce drag. Tires properly inflated and in good shape and freshly packed wheel bearings are a must. Brad

I'm sure that either car will be plenty to tow a DS. I tow mine, with a Carnai trailer, with a VW Van. Absolutely no problem with either enough power (I'm squeaking along with 95 hp) or braking.

About tongue weight - it SHOULD be about 5-10% of the trailer and boat weight. Do not "balance" the boat on the trailer so that the tongue is very easy to pick up. You will suffer handling problems and the trailer will have a higher likelihood to fishtail. You definitely want some weight on the tongue.

Your car will handle this fine. Most trailer hitches on this size car (class II??) are rated for 350 lbs. tongue weight.

The individual that I bought my DS from used an Outback to tow the boat. He said it was no problem.

I don't remember who, but the last time I went to Sarasota for Midwinters, I seem to remember someone had towed a DS from Mass. with a Forester.
