year info??

Postby dwaldo » Mon Nov 24, 2008 9:34 pm

I have recently been given an Oday daysailer that was stored in a backyard for years and just want to know what the year of manufacture is? I believe its a DS II but am not sure. The numbers on the plate are16767-299 4. This is the plate up forward by the storage compartment, not the HIN number because it doesn't have a HIN that I can tell of.That is there are no numbers on the transom where a HIN is normally located. Any info would be appreciated.

your numbers are stumping me, so lets use other criteria

Is there a short deck on top of the transom, and is there a lever for lifting the centerboard? If so you have a DS I, and the numbers are pre 1972. Let us know. Curious minds await.

Yes it has a handle for the centerboard and there is deck area at the transom with a well on the port side which I have no idea what its purpose is. The boat was in a backyard for years and I will have to repair a spot above the drain hole and put all new wood on it. But the boats in pretty good shape once you wash some grime off it.

The well on the DSI is where you can mount your motor.

Thats pretty neat. I thought I was going to have to buy one of those fixed mounts and put on the transom

pre 1970

In the header above, under technical info, there is a drop down menu with hull number index. It seems using the last 4 numbers of your code, it would be made between 1957 and Nov 1972. Standardized HIN's were required after that. If you have the original sails, is there a sail number on them as well? That may give a hint to its vintage.

I think the 2 sets of numbers you see are the manufacturing number and the class number (same as sail number). Probably a metal plate says Oday, Falmouth Mass. It is the 16767 Oday sailboat built and the sail number is 2994. All this plus the location you found the plate in tells me its probably a mid 60's DS1. Look through the users photos for some good reference pics.

If you don't need a motor you can use the well as a cooler. Make a cover fill it with ice and your favorite beverage. It even has a drain hole built in.

Have not seen the sails yet. They will be delivered with the title. Got the boat from a friend who is cleaning up his step dads place to sell and the stuff they don't want (like DS1's) they are bringing to my house. When I get the sails I'll check for numbers. I have a 23' olympic dolphin already but I'm excited about the DS1 as it is the same as the boat I learned to sail on.

dwaldo:

Since you are new to the group - welcome!

I bought my ODay last March. It had sat out in a field for about ten years befoe I bought it. THere is still a lot to do. I had to clean the hull, and repaint the inner hull, replace the running rigging and the sails. I ordered new standing rigging at the end of the season, and replaced the crazy mainsheet riggind with a 6:1 system.

You might want to get acquinted with DR Marine, who sells ODay aftermarket parts.

Yes I have them added to my bookmarks, I also have been gathering info on how to replace the floorboards as they are shot.I am going to have to replace all the running rigging as the old stuff just fell apart.I have not had a chance to study the mainsheet system yet. Looks like it will be no problem getting parts.I am thinking of using oak on the flooring instead of the more expensive mahogany Any suggestions?

floorboards

Postby kokko » Wed Nov 26, 2008 10:38 am

Someone on the website made patterns that you can upload.

I may have had it better. While my boat was outside, the PO stored the floorboards in his barn - where birds shit on them for ten years. I cleaned them up and completely disassembled them (labelling the parts!) and refinished. THey just glow. I was amazed. I did have to glue some cracked boards, replace some broken screws and recut a couple of the stringers, but that was about it. You may be surprised how much you are able to salvage from the old boards.

Some of the fwd section was intact so I will probably use some as a guide to cut new pieces. The more I scrub and inspect the more I like it. It will be different sail something with no ballast below.

It is a different experience. My other boat is a Catalina 22. I learned on a Sunny, then bought a Capri 14.2, sold theat, bought a MFG 19 keelboat, and sold that for the C22, then bought my Oday.

If they are original, then they are at least 40 years old
