Hello all,

I have a '68 DS I and I am interested in adding a motor this year.

My question is how long of a shaft does this motor need to have?

Specifically I am looking at a 1988 Yamaha 3HP "long shaft" (20"). I'm wondering if that is appropriate.

Is it too long? Will a standard shaft be long enough?

All I can tell you from my own experience is that 42 inches (on a trolling motor mounted on top of the transom on a DSII) is longer than you need.

I've got an Evinrude "long shaft" 4 hp on my DS. From what I understand, on the old OMC built outboards (Evinrude and Johnson) a long shaft is 22" and a standard shaft is 18".

My longshaft is fine for lake and ocean sailing. If lake sailing only, I'd guess the shortshaft would be Ok, given the shallow freeboard of the DS hull.

I think the Yamaha should be sufficient.

Seems that the 20" shaft on the motor I'm looking at will be more than sufficient.
