Guys, - Started rigging DS1 today ( for first time) - I have mast up and started to attach boom - the piece that slides in the goove of the mast(gooseneck?) and attaches to boom appears to require a "pin" which is missing from the PO. Is that correct?

Bob, are you referring to the tack pin? That is normally a "captive pin" that is part of the gooseneck casting:

If yours is missing, any old pin would do, as long as it fits the hole and is long enough? The captive one has a small roll pin in the end to hold it in place, and the hole in one "fork" of the casting is slotted to allow the pin to be inserted through the main tack cringle, but not fall out the other side. Make any sense?

This is the piece that the boom attaches to-right? Should there be a "pin" or is there other "dual" purpose rigging for this function ? The piece you speak of and picture is all there.

Your gooseneck slide should be attached to the boom with a "U-joint", held together with clevis pins, as shown here:

The spring thing is part of the roller reefing system (highly ineffective BTW).

Can you post a pic of what you *do* have?

Tim - I'm not at boat now, so can't take pics - - But looks like "clevis pin" is missing - I found one with PO items but was too short ( no room for cotter pin ) - I'll head down to local marine supply for replacement - It appears from your pic is requires "close fit" - no play ?

OK, no worries. Perfect pic to illustrate John! Yes, the clevis pins need to be "just the right length". If your local place doesn't have them, you can get them from D&R. On TRW, after I added the boom vang, the open, "middle" part of the U-joint started to collapse/distort, so I made a solid SS one. Also, I note in the D&R pic (which is also upside-down) that they are using cotter pins on the clevis pins. I've been using circlips all along, and they get quite distorted in that application, so I'm gonna change to cotters as well ...

The boom on the Rhodes 19 and the Mariner is the same as used on the Day Sailer. Stuart Marine (current maker of R19 & Mariner) sells the individual parts of the gooseneck including the correct length clevis pin. http://www.stuartmarine.com/spars-rigging-1972-1980/ The gooseneck parts are at the bottom of the page. Stuart's prices are higher than D&R for the complete gooseneck, but they do sell the individual parts.
