Boom Outhaul

How is the boom outhaul line secured? We have a block located on the side end of the boom to run the line through, re-directing it back along the boom, but no cleat. A second block is located about 4' from the boom end and, to date, we've been running the line through this block and then back to the end of the boom where we secure it. There are several padeyes mounted on the boom but, again, no cleat. It works - but I know it isn't correct. Are diagrams available - or are we simply missing a certain piece of hardware?

My DSII, a 77, came with a v-jam cleat on the starboard side of boom almost right above the mainsheet block. You could use a clam cleat as well.
I don't like the v-jam cleat very much and will probably change it before next season.

Jam Cleat

That's what I would have expected to find - but there's no sign (i.e. -holes) of any kind of cleat having been installed before.

I put a second small block on my outhaul and it's much more usable.

A line is tied to the boom end, then run to a small block which is shackled to the clew of the mainsail. Line then runs from that back to a small block attached to the same fitting on the end of the boom that the line is tied to initially. Through that end block foreward to a jam cleat on side of boom, located more-or-less above the mainsheet cleat. Using this double block arrangement it's much easier to pull the main out tighter, and using the jam cleat is no problem.

I have a few pictures if ya wanna see.

George, that's really strange. I've never seen anything like that, though I'm having a hard time picturing it. And I thought all versions, race and standard came with that v-jam cleat. What year is yours?
See if you can't get a picture up, I'll try to do the same.

It's a late '84 - one of the last 200 or so built. There are a peculiar number of stainless steel padeyes mounted on the boom end - perhaps something to do with a boom tent enclosure - but the lack of a jam cleat, or even a standard cleat, is indeed strange.

maybe you have some sort of internal outhaul..? Is there any opening, clew end, for the line to pass through? Seems like it would still have a cleat somewhere in the equation.

That's a simple enough setup and just what I would have expected to be there. No - nothing internal on the boom. Thanks for the pictures.
