has anyone MOVED their cam cleats for the jib lines up on TOP of the rail?, i saw somebodys boat with this set up, looks like it would be eaiser to set your lines.And give you more cockpit space ?

The deciding factor in where your jib leads go is the correct angle of force on the sail to maintain the proper sail shape. Many times that isn't the most convenient spot but chances are you won't be sitting on the leeward side of the boat, so losing that space is not so critical.

My observation has been that having the jib tracks inboard allows you to dispense with barber haulers. Running the blocks forward seems to give me about as much pinch on the jib as I can accomodate with my main. If you moved the lead to the rail, I wonder if they would still provide the right shape. I note from an old brochure that the DS III had the leads on the combing, so maybe I'm all wet.

Any racers have thoughts on this? I had barber leads on my last boat, but ended up unrigging them when they didn't make a difference.

Well, I'm not a racer, but one day I experimented with barber haulers and noticed a definite difference right away, even though I had older sails. My new sails came with a recommendation to use barbers. (The effect seems to be more pronounced at higher winds, which I don't get to go out in as often).

I occasionally feel like rigging an outhaul when going downwind (no spinnaker). In light winds, I use a paddle to boom out the jib.

Barber Haulers are a definite plus. My first daysailer did not have them when I first bought it and I could not point. Adding the barber haulers allowed me to point with an increase in power achieved from improved jib shape.

OK, OK. I'll try barber haulers again. One reason they didn't make a difference before was probably my blown-out sails. I have new sails now, so I suppose I should try to get the most out of them.
