Sail Numbers

I just purchased a 1974 O'Day DS II hull number XDYD71820774. What is the number I should put on my sail? I am assuming the number should be 7182 but I need some verification on that. I have 2 mainsails, both have the DS logo, 1 has no numbers and the other has a number which assume is from a different boat.
According to a hull number search online, this boat was manufactured in Fall River, Mass. in July of 1974. My assumption is based on 7182 being the serial number and 0774 is the month and year of manufacture. This number is in the fiberglass on the outside of the transom and there is no metal plate anywhere on the boat.

You are exactly right on both sail # and date of manufacture. Welcome to the group.

Zowie. They were crankin' 'em out in those days. I have hull #6540, built in April of 1973. If #7182 was finished in July '04, that would be 642 boats in 15 months, or about 43 boats a month. Nowadays, when you go to the Cape Cod web site, it looks like the DS is produced one boat at a time. Maybe that's a consequence of building so many long-lasting boats in the first place. I wonder how many out-of-service Daysailers are recommissioned every year.
