mast height ?

I keep seeing 24ft or 22ft for the mast length on a DSII

so I am guessing the 2ft diff is the below the pivot tabernacle ?
and the real upper bit is 22ft

I just got a DSII hull only
and need to use a mast off another boat

I have a Chrysler 26ft mast
and another mast off a old beat to death flying jr 20ft
may use both as heavy and light air rigs

any one else useing an other boats rig on their DSII ?

I just day sail no interest in racing or class rules

According to section 3 of the handbook (in the assocation tab above), the maximum height of the mainsail (3rd mast band) is 22'6" above the upper side of the cuddy roof. The dimension from the cuddy roof down is not controlled but 2 feet sounds about right for my boat. That would put the mast length somewhere around 25' with the masthead fitting. I would think your 26' Chrysler mast would work fine.

I think you should consider the weight of the replacement mast. If it is similar to the weight of the stock mast that came with your DS II it would probably be ok. If it is heavier then beware that the additional weight added aloft will affect your boats tendency to heel up quickly or worse. Brad

the C mast looks to be about the same shape and wall thickness

I have stuck screws in the lower in the cabin bit but as soon as that is done
I will be able to test fit to both the bottom shoe and the cabin top hole

anyway as I have a shorter rig too with a 20ft stick and smaller sails with reef points
that will be used on heaver days
and the bigger stick for lighter air

Interesting concept that, selecting your mast based on the expected wind.

I don't know if your chrysler mast is from a buccaneer, made by Chrysler. If so the dimensions for the masts are very close for width depth and length (the DS was about 6" longer). So I think it would work for your needs.

Both are keel stepped so if your DS is deck stepped then that needs to be taken in and would bring it closer to 22' instead of the 24' that i think mine is, I didn't measure the length but can if you need it. Deflection tests show the buccaneer mast to be stiffer so you'de need to take that into consideration and maybe use shorter spreaders. The bucc doesn't use spreaders for what thats worth.

the only issue that I see in your multiple mast setup is where your Center of effort (CE) of each rig is in relation to the center of lateral resistance (CLR) on the DS.

On the Chrysler, the masthead rig with full-length jib and smallish boom may move that CE too far in relation to the CLR on the DS. You could ude the same mast and adapt the standard 3/4 rig of the DS to it then there's no problem, the smaller rig (Fj) the CE of it is likely to be in the same spot as on the DS and that you could use without issues. Just bear in mind that the mast from the chrysler is ok but not the rig/sail arrangement (convert to DS rigging), otherwise you would have to step the mast further aft

There was an article in Small Craft Advisor in 2011 (as I recall) about a Day Sailer have the rig of another boat put on it to simplify mast rig setup. I'll try to find which issue if you are interested. I know back issues of the magazine can be ordered.

basically what the windsurfer types do

I would not set out to buy and use new masts and sails
but as I already have all the bits sails ect used
I figure it is worth a try

this is not my first FRANKEN rig boat
we use to live aboard at anchor
and saved several older hulls and odd rigs

the wildest was a 16ft bald head schooner [no jib]
with a masthead control sheet on the 4 sided foresail [small main top cut off ]
it looks like a fore gaff sail but no stick just a top and bottom sheet control
that kills twist and allows a low rig that points high

lone-star 16 the one with two bilge boards
mast it has spreaders in about the DSII position
I got the mast to fit the shoe with a little grinding on the foot bit
it was about a 1/16'' off the DSII mast shape overall
