I want to paint the name of my boat on the transom of my DSIII. Any suggestions on type of paint.

Use a contrasting color to your hull

You don't write whether your hull's been painted or not. If so, that would affect the choice.

If not, you might look at alternatives to paint, including getting a name printed on foil, which you could apply as one piece. That gives more freedom for design than what you can realize with paint. According to what I read, the result should be quite durable.

Along with foil have you thought of vinyl?

My parent's had their boat name cut in vinyl 20 years ago and after moving from New Jersey to Rhode Island my father brought the True Type font that was used to the new lettering guy and he cut a new town name for him. Removing the old lettering, which was maroon and hadn't faded either, wasn't difficult to do.

As with foil, you don't need to worry about your spacing, it's on one sheet and is faster to apply and doesn't need to dry.

Check your local Yellow Pages. You may find someone nearby that does the same thing.

As odd as it may sound I have used Rustoleum paint products to letter on different surfaces. I have also used it to paint one of my boats. It comes in a variety of colors plus it is very durable and color fast, and it is far cheaper than speciality marine paint. You may want to thin it some. Brad

I have used vinyl leterring. West Marine has an online site for boa names - you can choose the color, font and size and see what it looks like.

I found West to be pretty expensive and found a local sign shop that did it for half the cost.
