I was on the Small Craft Advisor forum and saw a post with these three videos on youtube of a Day Sailer sailing the Labrador coast.

I want to do that! I'm not sure how des ol bones'd be feel'n afterwards, but it'd be worth it if you have partner who's game for it. What a way to really explore the coastline.

George Van Sickle described the Labrador Day Sailer adventure in a series of four articles in the DS Quarterly (Fall 95, Winter 96, Spring 96, and Summer 96). The articles are very interesting, and the You Tube videos complement them very well. The articles spark the sailing adventure urge that many of us have. I read later that the two sailors were on their way to another adventure in Mexico, Central, or South America (don't remember exactly where). While towing their boat, they had an accident in Mexico, and the Day Sailer was damaged beyond repair.

I was wondering about the construction of the boat. The cuddy opening looks like a DSIII, but the lazarette in the stern (at least I think it's a lazarette) looks like an early DSI.

Anybody know which model it is, and if some of that work was custom?

I think it says somewhere on the first video under comments that it was one of the Day Sailers made by Sunfish.

Yes, that is correct. George Van Sickle mentions "Our Sunfish/Laser-built Day Sailer...." in the first of the DS Quarterly articles. I don't know what the dark panel in the stern is (lazarette?); it appears as well in several article photos. Based on photos and notes in the articles, the only non-standard DS items appear to be the oars and oar locks, three reef points in the mainsail, and a roller-reefed jib. Their equipment plus six weeks of rations amounted to 250 to 300 pounds. Departure date was July 27 and return August 31.

Thanks, guys. I found a photo of a Sunfish Daysailer at the Cape Cod Shipbuilding website, and it looks just like it.

It looks like a very dry boat, just the thing you'd need for that sort of adventure.
