Help on buying boat.

Postby DaddyDiesel » Wed Jun 10, 2009 2:35 pm

Hello everyone. I use to Sail quite a bit when I was a kid. It was with my grandfather and he sailed a J-24. He was very good at getting me involved with the activity on the boat. Now its been quite a few years since then. I remember a lot of the techniques and terms.

Why all the back story? Well I have been wanting to take up sailing again since my grandpa passed away many years ago. Now I finnally have to the time and money. So long story short Im a novice Sailor who is looking at buying a boat.

I currently have a lead on a boat and it looks like a Daysailer. BUt I cant determine what version. THis is the listing and some photos.

Sailboat Mariner 17’ Daysailer

Great lake sailboat for sale with trailer and gear in really good shape. Includes jib and main sail, electric trolling motor and lines. Lead keel swings into place, super stable and really fun on the lakes. Large cockpit for up to 5-6 people. Made to pull right up on shore. Self bailing cockpit with cutty cabin for storage of gear and cooler. New Harkin fiddle block with spring cleat for the main. Refinished wood including rudder, bottom is super clean.

I guess whats confusing by this title is that he calls it a Mariner Daysailer. The pictures tell me that it looks like an O'day Daysailer I. BUt it has a lead keel and a self bailing cockpit which make me think its a Daysailer II.

Let me know what you guys and gals think. If you have any advice on what I should look for when taking a personal look at the boat that would be great.

Thanks DD

Mariner

I see you confusion. THe boat is not a Daysailer (in caps), but a daysailer (lower case). TO add to you confusion, ODay and Rhodes sold a Mariner, which was a 19' boat. I loaned out my daysailer field guides so it will be hard to tell just who the maker of this boat was.

That being said, it looks like a nice boat.

I'll see what else I can come up with.

Although it is not a “DaySailer” as in a I, II, or III, it definitely looks like a well made and well designed daysailer that should bring you lots of enjoyment and performance. Welcome back to the sailing world. Many on this site have similar history with sailing. Started young then got away from it for many years but now we are back. Best to you and your new adventures. Brad

BTW _- What is its length and beam ?

Looking at the pics. I don't think that is the original rudder. It looks larger and deeper than what one would expect for a boat that size. THe size and shape looks like the kick-up rudder for my Catalina 22.

It may be a few days before I get my field guides back to help you identify the maker.

Still, it is a smart looking boat. Love the wood.
