Yet another newbie, and a "Free" DS1!

Yep, that's right, folks, I found what I believe is a DS1 on Freecycle this weekend! I've yet to get the paint off the ID plate, so I don't have a hull number yet, but judging by pictures I've seen here, it certainly looks like a DS1. The only work that needs done is replacing the transom (work I've done before on other boats, so not a show-stopper). Otherwise, the trailer, hull, mast, boom, sails (new), all in good shape.

There is one exception, and the thing I do need help with: the standing rigging could use a little help. The headstay has one strand unraveling, and the shrouds are different sizes, and one is swaged, and the other NicoPressed. If I'm going to do this, I'd rather do it just once, and do it right.

I found the Rigging Guide and Rigging Measurements under the Technical Info tab, but it appears to only specify the running rigging. Is there any specification for the standing rigging? I'd like to get this squared away soon!

I'm hoping to have this boat floatin' and sailin' by the end of the month (just in time for Fall, but hey, I didn't pick the time, and the boat sorta found me on its own terms).

I'm really looking forward to getting going with this little guy, and the family is, too! Any help or advice you can provide is greatly appreciated!

I would suggest that you take some pictures and post them to this forum. If you are not sure that you have a DaySailer 1 the rigging might be a different length. There were some copies of the DaySailer back in the day. However, if you post some good pictures, people will be able to tell you for sure.

If you do indeed have a DS 1 then getting a shroud set from D&R Marine is probably the simplest way to go. You might save a few bucks going to Dwyer and I'd guess that they would already have the correct Daysailer rigging measurements.

My DS1 transom only has an approximately 10 inch wide plywood backer/reinforcement for the rudder gudgeons but otherwise a solid fiberglass. I don't know about the later boats that had balsa core maybe they also had a cored transom.

I am pretty certain it's a DS(x) as the stern/afterdeck look exactly like two that are shown as flower boxes in the Photos section (what a sad way to go).

One of the previous owners apparently tried to redo the transom and unfortunately did not do a good job of it, and the plywood has rotted badly.

I will take your advice and shoot some pix when I get home today, and get them posted. I'll also be sure to get to the ID plate tonight as well.

For the price of postage, I will gladly give you my old shrouds. I bought the upgraded 1/8" rigging from DR Marine. I have the two side stays and the forestay, but not the diamond stays.

Well...this is a little embarrassing, but a close inspection of the ID plate shows it's a Sailstar, not an O'Day! How 'bout that? I'll still keep it and use it, as it's in decent shape, with the exception of the transom.

I'll be posting pix a little later, as this appears to be a right useful place for ideas, if not actual parts, etc!

Since I've never seen a Sailstar I was curious about the confusion, and found this page with this note:

"The listed designer, Talman Bigelow was a former employee of the O'Day Corporation. The builder of the EXPLORER 17 was sued (unsuccessfully) by O'Day because of it's obvious similarity to O'Day's DAYSAILOR.

Sailstar offered a keel version of this same hull which was called the PIONEER."

I hope I did this right. As you can see, the similarities are striking. The big difference I noticed was the centerboard lever, as well as the trailing edge of the cabin top. Otherwise, it's the same hull, down to the little well in the afterdeck to accommodate the clamps for the outboard!

It's hull number 669, for whatever that's worth.

The front of the boat is rather close to vertical on a DS, so with your boat's bow inclined closer to 60 degrees, I'm guessing you might have a different boat. Perhaps an O'Day Osprey?

Actually, I've confirmed that it is a Sailstar Explorer. The plate was badly faded and had some paint on it, too, so it took a little doing to figure this out. Still a cool looking boat, and it's just begging to get going, so how could I refuse it? I don't even need permission for free!

Life's kinda nutsy this week, but I do expect to get a good start on the necessary repairs by the weekend.
