Mast head sheave jam recurring...

The mast head keeps jamming with the halyard cable AFTER I have stepped it and then I have to unstep and restep... pita.
Below are some pics of the sheaves/head.... Does it appear to be overly worn and in need of replacement? Or perhaps just the sheaves?

I have a DS2 1976.

Sheaves are cheap. Replace them first. While you're at it, replace the bolts and nuts holding them in with stainless steel.

Is that steel cable?
If so, you might consider replacing it with Dyneema or another modern fiber. Stronger, lighter, little stretch, can be attached with knots or splices, and runs very smoothly in the sheaves.

When I replaced my halyards I switched to line for the full length on my 1976 DS II. No regrets doing that. Modern line doesn't stretch as much as when these boats were first built and you don't need the half line/half wire halyard.

I agree with Shagbark in replacing the bolts with stainless steel. D&R Marine sells the correct sheaves.

What size line/dyneema goes well in these halyards?

BTW...I see that you are in Eugene... I'm in Waldport and sail mostly in Alsea Bay.

Halyards are usually 1/4" line.

1/4" is a bit stronger than necessary for Dyneema....

I've been using 3/16" for several years now. See my writeup.
